What is a Naturopathic doctor?

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are primary health care providers trained to diagnose and treat various conditions using a holistic approach. NDs focus on finding the root cause of disease and assist the body in restoring balance with natural therapies. We individualize treatment plans based on each patient's unique requirements and treat the individual, not their diagnosis.

Are Naturopathic doctors regulated?

Naturopathic doctors are primary care providers who have graduated from a Naturopathic medical school recognized by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME) and have successfully completed the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX). In Ontario, NDs are also registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO) after successful completion of the Ontario Clinical and Jurisprudence Examinations. CONO's website has a list of registered Naturopathic Doctors - you should be able to find your Naturopathic doctor's name on that list.  Naturopathic Medical Licenses have to be renewed annually, which requires keeping up to date with all continuing education and CPR training requirements.

Are Naturopathic services covered by OHIP?

Naturopathic services are not currently covered by OHIP, however most extended health benefit plans cover a significant portion of a Naturopathic visit.  Check with your insurance provider for your benefits package details!

What is the difference between Medical & Naturopathic doctors?

Naturopathic and Medical Doctors are primary care providers with similar training in medical and clinical sciences. Both MDs and NDs are trained to diagnose and treat various acute and chronic conditions. The main difference is their treatment approach. NDs use a holistic approach in assisting the body in healing while MDs focus on treating the symptoms, mainly due to a time constraint. Naturopathic doctors have longer visits with patients, which gives them an opportunity to get to know each one of their patients and fully explore the root causes of their illness.
