The first official day of summer is just around the corner, and whether you plan to go on an international trip, a vacation at your cottage or to spend a few leisurely days in your backyard, it’s important to be prepared with a first aid kit. The most common things to include in a basic first aid kit are remedies for: cuts, scrapes, bug bites, sore throat, dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, sunburn, jet lag and the sometimes-inevitable hangover. This is a list of things I like to have on hand:

Cuts and scrapes: For superficial cuts, scrapes and rashes use a calendula cream; do not use on deep or open wounds.

Bug bites: Ice the area for 15-20min, then use Dapis gel by Boiron – it helps to relieve itching, pain and hives associated with insect bites.

Sore throat: As soon as you feel the first symptoms indicating that a cold might be coming, use oil of oregano and Echinacea spray to kill the bacteria and shorten the duration of the infection.

Dehydration: Coconut water is one of the best natural electrolyte drinks, you can drink it alone or add some lemon to it for flavour. Another option is to purchase electrolyte powders available in small pouches such as those of CanPrev ElectroMag or Vega Sport Electrolyte Hydrator. Make sure you consume electrolyte drinks in cases of vomiting and/ or diarrhea.

Vomiting or diarrhea: grapefruit seed extract can be used for treatment, just follow instructions on the bottle. Also consider peppermint, chamomile and ginger tea to help soothe an upset stomach. If symptoms persist, please see a healthcare provider.

Constipation: it can be hard adjusting to the change in microbes when visiting another country, so to prevent this purchase a good-quality probiotic that doesn’t have to be refrigerated. Begin taking the probiotic at least 3 days before your vacation and continue to take it a few days after you come back.

Sunburn: aloe vera gel hands down for its soothing and cooling properties; try to look for a brand that is paraben, SLS and phthalate-free.

Jet lag: melatonin is the best remedy for jet lag and can also be used as a sleep aid. Consult your Naturopathic doctor for the brand and dose that’s right for you.

Hangover: keep hydrated and give Plan C a try, the ultimate hangover pill, which helps to process alcohol and replenish nutrients that may have been lost.

Have fun and stay safe!

Please note these are suggestions for minor first aid use, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor for further medical assistance.
